What is LRV (Light Reflectance Value)?

LRV, or Light Reflectance Value, is a measurement that indicates the percentage of light a paint color reflects. It is a scale that ranges from 0% (absolute black) to 100% (pure white).

The higher the LRV, the more light a color reflects, and the brighter it appears. Conversely, colors with lower LRV values absorb more light and appear darker.

How is LRV Used in Exterior House Paint Color Selection?

Determining Contrast: LRV helps homeowners and designers choose colors that create the desired level of contrast between the main body of the house, trim, and accents. For example, pairing a high LRV color (like white) with a low LRV color (like charcoal gray) creates a striking, high-contrast look.

Energy Efficiency: Colors with higher LRV values reflect more sunlight, which can help keep your home cooler in hot climates. This can lead to lower energy costs for air conditioning. Conversely, in colder climates, lower LRV colors absorb more heat, potentially reducing heating costs.

Aesthetic Preferences: LRV can help you achieve a specific look or feel for your home. Higher LRV colors create a bright, airy, and spacious appearance, while lower LRV colors can make a home look more substantial, cozy, or dramatic.

Maintenance: Lighter colors with higher LRV values tend to show dirt, grime, and imperfections more easily, which may require more frequent cleaning and maintenance. Darker colors with lower LRV values can help conceal these issues but may fade more quickly due to sun exposure.

Feeling Beachy Blue

My previous home was treated to a new coat of paint, namely "Iced Green" by Benjamin Moore. Yeah, I know - it looks more blue than green.

The blue was offset by good old white, with a nice grey shingled roof. It's funny how you find a new favorite house color. For me, it was simply a case of driving around the neighborhood!

When I saw a home with a paint color I loved, I parked the car, knocked on the front door and asked the owner the name of the paint color.

He asked me to come in, offered me a glass of iced tea while he rummaged through the garage for any leftover paint. He returned and triumphantly exclaimed, "The paint is Iced Green by Benjamin Moore!" and that decision was as good as done.
